GOOD TO KNOW

The whole story
behind peanut butter, chunky, vitamin and mineral fortified

Nutrition is rarely simply “good” or “bad”. Here is the balanced picture to help you decide what fits your diet.

THE UPSIDE

Why it can be a great choice

  • Provides 26.1 g protein and 5.7 g fibre per 100 g.
  • The USDA fortified reference provides 43.2 mg alpha-tocopherol vitamin E, 2.52 mg vitamin B6 and 313 micrograms total folate per 100 g.
  • Provides 17.5 mg iron, 370 mg magnesium and 316 mg phosphorus per 100 g in this fortified reference.
  • The peanut pieces provide a more textured alternative to smooth fortified peanut butter while retaining a spreadable format.

THE DOWNSIDE

What to keep in mind

  • Contains 593 kcal and 51.5 g fat per 100 g, so fortification does not make it low calorie or low fat.
  • Contains 366 mg sodium, equivalent to about 0.915 g salt per 100 g.
  • Contains 10.9 g total sugars per 100 g; the ingredient list is needed to determine the amount and type of added sweetener.
  • Fortification levels differ substantially between products, so these high micronutrient values must not be applied to ordinary peanut butter.
  • Peanut is a major food allergen and can cause severe reactions; package cross-contact information also matters.
  • Nut butter served in thick spoonfuls and nut pieces can be choking hazards for young children; follow age-appropriate preparation guidance.
