GOOD TO KNOW

The whole story
behind ginkgo nuts, raw

Nutrition is rarely simply “good” or “bad”. Here is the balanced picture to help you decide what fits your diet.

+

THE UPSIDE

Why it can be a great choice

  • The USDA analytical profile records 4.32 g protein per 100 g.
  • The profile records 510 mg potassium, 124 mg phosphorus and 27 mg magnesium per 100 g.
  • The profile records 15 mg vitamin C, 0.328 mg vitamin B6 and 54 micrograms folate per 100 g.
  • At 1.68 g fat per 100 g, the analysed raw kernel differs markedly from most high-fat nuts; this is compositional information, not a consumption recommendation.

THE DOWNSIDE

What to keep in mind

  • Fresh raw ginkgo seeds are toxic when consumed orally and can cause serious poisoning, including vomiting and seizures; do not eat this raw product.
  • Cooking does not make unlimited consumption safe: serious adverse effects have also occurred after roasted ginkgo seeds, especially with larger amounts.
  • Ginkgo seeds contain 4-O-methylpyridoxine, or ginkgotoxin, which interferes with vitamin B6 activity; the measured vitamin B6 value does not cancel this hazard.
  • USDA does not report total sugar, fibre, vitamin E, vitamin K or selenium for this record; database zeroes in those fields are technical fallbacks, not measured zero values.
  • Children are particularly vulnerable to seed poisoning, and suspected ingestion or symptoms require urgent poison-control or medical advice.
  • The fleshy outer seed coat can irritate skin, and wild seeds also require certain identification; avoid handling unknown fallen material without appropriate precautions.
